Endless opportunities in health care

When you consider the concept of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math or STEAM education, you might think mastering any one of these subjects leads to a STEAM-related career. But the idea of STEAM is much more than the sum of its parts.

Young people need to have a good understanding of all five of these subjects to solve challenges in industries that require new ways of thinking. This is especially the case in health care where individuals can do much more than care for patients at the bedside.

Students performing STEAM experiments in a laboratory.Today, there are opportunities to join the medical field in a variety of ways, including as a bioengineer, medical illustrator, app designer and many more. All of these, including clinical roles, require backgrounds in at least three STEAM disciplines. We want to share the possibilities with you!

In partnership with the Illinois Innovation Network, Jump Simulation is participating in the DoIT STEAM Expo at the Illinois State Fair. Families who stop at the Jump STEAM booth will get hands-on experiences in a number of interactive activities that highlight endless opportunities in health care.

What are the activities my family can participate in?

Glad you asked! When you get to the Jump STEAM booth, education specialists will hand you a passport to three stations. Each station includes two activities.

At station one, you and your family can either watch or take part in an animal dissection. Microscopes will also be available for you to take a closer look at microscopic specimens.

At station two, you can learn more about how medicine intersects with engineering. Jump bioengineers will be 3D printing objects. There will also be a silicone-pouring station where you will make a piece of anatomy and take it home with you!

The third station highlights opportunities in medical illustration as well as computer and app programming. You can explore a variety of health care careers with a newly-developed virtual reality library program. You can play with a new app that teaches young people how to segment anatomy. And you can walk away with our PNC Activity Book that allows users to watch anatomy pop off the page, using augmented reality.

At the end of each day, individuals who complete their passports will get the chance to win a microscope kit that gives students the chance to explore the tool in a variety of ways. Jump STEAM will also raffle off a STEAM experience that can be completed at home.

How do I find you at the fair?

Jump STEAM will be at the Illinois State Fair during the week of August 18-22 every day. We will be located in the air-conditioned Orr Building near Gates 8 and 9. Admission for kids 12 and under is free.

We hope to see you there!
