OSF HealthCare and Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center are kicking off a one-year Advanced Practice Provider (APP) fellowship for newly minted Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants specializing in primary care. The program is the first of its kind in Illinois, and among a small group training APNs and PAs side by side.
The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship will help APPs increase knowledge and better transition into practice with mentorship from experienced providers as well as in-seat and simulation-based education.
“The program will expand Advanced Practice Providers’ ability to think critically through challenges they’ll face when evaluating, treating and managing patients,” said Melinda Cooling, Vice President of Advanced Practice for OSF HealthCare.
The Fellowship is crucial as APPs’ roles in healthcare expand across the U.S. The Health Resources and Services Administration estimates a shortage of 20,400 primary care physicians by 2020 while demand is expected to increase 14%. OSF HealthCare is transforming its model of care to meet this need by training Advanced Practice Providers to work at the highest levels of their licensure.
“Studies indicate a large proportion of primary care can be delivered safely and effectively by Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants. This allows Physicians to focus on more complex patient needs, providing better quality of care overall”, said Cooling.
Four Advanced Practice Nurses and one Physician Assistant hired by OSF will participate in the inaugural program.
