Jump Simulation is partnering with Team Neurodynamics, a California-based research group, to determine how health care teams assimilate, interact and ultimately, succeed or fail in the task at hand.
Team Neurodynamics offers a unique way to answer such questions.
Its approach has been applied to a variety of situations, ranging from teams of high school students solving science problems to submarine navigation teams. This is the first time the group’s research has been carried out with health care teams, however.
Team Neurodynamics has developed metrics by which physiological inputs obtained through an EEG headset can become the basis for a process used to correlate neurophysiological, communication-based and observable aspects of teamwork. By studying these correlations, identifiable patterns begin to emerge.
These patterns have the potential to provide valuable insights for use in designing both training curricula and system-wide improvements in health care. Team Neurodynamics is conducting early research in the simulated operating room environment at Jump.
Jump and Team Neurodynamics have so far collected two sets of data in 2015. The researchers used operating room scenarios designed to assess various indicators of teamwork.
Since studying inter-professional teamwork is an important part of understanding health care outcomes, inter-professional teams were chosen for the data capture. Data was collected using both experienced and novice clinicians.
The ultimate goals of this research are to improve patient outcomes and reduce health care spending.
