About the Partnership
In a strategic partnership between CSE Software Inc. and OSF HealthCare at Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center, CSE is developing a simulation for an infusion pump device. The correct use of infusion pump devices is critical to patient care and safety. Smart Pumps work independently and together to deliver lifesaving blood, medications and other fluids.
The computerized unit provides the foundation to build and customize infusion for patients. Pump units can then be added to the foundation unit to deliver fluids based on individual patient needs.
Delivery methods could be via intravenous, intra-arterial, subcutaneous, epidural, enteral or irrigation of fluid spaces. Up to four pump modules could be attached to a single unit (allowing four different infusions).
Using interactive training developed by CSE Software, hospital professionals will learn the proper operation of the Smart Pump and supporting software program used for patient safety. The actual pump has a built-in computer and it is constantly collecting and monitoring data. The system helps improve patient safety and reinforces best practices.
Through the simulation of this device, OSF can ensure training on the infusion pump is delivered consistently and efficiently to personnel. Interactive training allows doctors, nurses and support staff to become familiar with every button, dial and screen on the pump and workings of each key area before using the actual infusion pump. In addition, process and procedures can be covered to help personnel get a full understanding of the device; or it can even be used for patient education.
As part of ongoing training and anticipation of medical advances, CSE will develop the simulation with the ability to add more training modules later on. As the Smart Pump technology changes or new safety procedures are identified, additional interactive training can be added to keep the simulation current with patient and hospital needs. Individual and classroom testing can also be added. To ensure that all users have properly learned the procedures, safety information and compliance issues, modules can be developed to test their knowledge and retention levels.
To further research and development, CSE Software and OSF HealthCare are working together with a grant research team to obtain funding to support the efforts that prove the value of simulation training in healthcare. The research developed by CSE and OSF HealthCare will then be used in future simulations. In addition to simulation development, CSE also develops eLearning/mLearning, mobile apps and custom software for business applications. The company’s expertise crosses many industries, including healthcare.
Ultimately Smart Pump simulation training at Jump will lead to better patient care. The ability to train with realistic tools and environments ensures that medical professionals learn the same techniques as they will use in a real-world medical situation. CSE Software Inc. is proud to be a partner in this endeavor with OSF HealthCare.
